Murraylands

map of Murraylands region In Murraylands many visitors come for a taste of river life. North to south, Swan Reach to Wellington, the River Murray nears the end of its long journey. Around 8,000 years ago, indigenous peoples camped on the river's banks and navigated its waters. Traces of their campfires can be found at Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park and Aboriginal custodian guides lead tours of this fascinating archaeological site.

This broad belt of country reaches from the eastern rim of the Mount Lofty Ranges through mallee country and farmlands to the border town of Pinnaroo. For birdwatching, it's hard to beat the Murray River backwaters: hire a kayak or book an eco-cruise. Learn about the river's history at the Mannum Dock Museum. The venerable PS Marion home ports in Mannum - and she's open for inspection. Many charter houseboats also tie up here. The river has an impressive fleet, from nothing fancy to a floating palace.

Be sure to safari out to Monarto Zoological Park, part of an international program designed to preserve vulnerable species. The 1,000 hectare open range zoo resembles African savannah and giraffes, zebras, antelopes and cheetahs thrive in this habitat.
